SpaceX Crew-8 Capsule Returns as Stranded NASA Astronauts Await Homecoming

The SpaceX Crew-8 capsule landed in the Gulf of Mexico near Pensacola, Florida. However, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, stationed on the International Space Station (ISS) since June, couldn’t return with Crew-8. They were left behind after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft experienced technical issues, prompting NASA to send it back uncrewed on September 6. To facilitate their return, NASA added them to the SpaceX Crew-9 mission, which launched on September 28. Still, they couldn’t return sooner because Crew-8’s capsule was fully occupied. In the meantime, Williams and Wilmore have continued with their duties aboard the ISS, with Williams even assuming the role of ISS commander once more. They are scheduled to return to Earth in February 2025.
